You've decided to upgrade your lawn mowing situation by purchasing a Husqvarna Automower. Before you start looking for the best "deal," it's important to understand what you're buying. This ensures you can purchase confidently and get the most value for your money on an Automower, rather than just opting for a low price. This guide will explore various Husqvarna Automower models that you might find at seemingly great prices and explain what to consider, the questions to ask the seller, and the best places to buy from to maximize your investment and ensure a great after-purchase experience.

With the announcement that the new Husqvarna Automower iQ Series will be released at the beginning of the 2025 mowing season, and considering the pricing of these feature-rich new Automower models, there will undoubtedly be a change in the value of previous Husqvarna Automower models. Given that you can purchase a new Husqvarna 440iQ Automower, which operates wirelessly with EPOS (RTK) navigation, includes the "Support by wire" feature, covers up to 2 acres, and comes with the reference station, for $4,299.99, who would consider paying $6,000 for a 450X EPOS, 450XH EPOS, 550 EPOS, or 550H EPOS with fewer features a good deal? This is exactly what we aim to clarify in this article.

New Is Not Necessarily "NEW"

When considering the purchase of a Husqvarna Automower, it's important to understand that a "NEW" Automower in a box isn't necessarily brand new. Additionally, buying an Automower in 2025 doesn't guarantee it's a 2025 model. Surprisingly, many models from 2019 are still available, having remained at dealerships or in warehouses. In some instances, even older models are still on dealer shelves. So, while these mowers are new, they aren't the latest version.

Remember that not all models are identical, and even Automowers with the same model numbers can vary. This is because models produced at certain times have better parts and components compared to the same model manufactured at a different time. This variation occurs because many models have been produced for over five years, and during this period, there have been continuous upgrades to the parts used when assembling the mowers and the software installed at the factory. For example, a 450X with a 2016 serial number, a 450X with a 2019 serial number, and a 450X with a 2022 serial number may all be the same model, but they are indeed built differently, and not all differences are apparent without opening the mower's chassis. Over the years, components like wheel motors, cutting disks, circuit boards, transformers, wiring harnesses, batteries, and other essential parts have been updated during production changes, making the newer versions more reliable and better performing than the older ones.

Another example is the 430X Automower. Initially launched in 2016, it lacked headlights, and Automower Connect was an optional accessory. In 2018, its design was updated to resemble its larger counterpart, the 450X, making it easy to distinguish between the 2016-2017 models and those from 2018 onwards. However, similar to the 450X, a 430X from 2018 and one from 2022 are not identical, despite sharing the same model number and appearance. Various enhancements were made to the 430X between 2018 and 2022 that many are unaware of. Even models like the 435X and 535AWD underwent significant updates during production between 2020 and 2023, resulting in newer versions that are less problematic and perform better than the originals.

Importance Of The Serial Number When Buying A Husqvarna Automower

Husqvarna Automower productnumber, serial number, and battery charge by date on the box

You're probably wondering where do you even start to determine if an Automower is actually a new version or older version and what you can expect to find when you pull it out of the box? The serial number of the Automower is going to be the best indicator to start with knowing what you are getting. You can find the serial number on the Automower box and obviously on the Automower itself. Determining the year the mower was built by the serial number is very simple. The first two digits of the serial number are they year the mower was assembled. For example, an Automower with a serial number that starts with 16 was built in 2016. One with a serial number that starts with 19 was built in 2019. A serial number starting with 22 was built in 2022.

The RW2022 sticker meaning that the COM board was upgraded in 2022

After identifying when the Automower was manufactured, the next step is to check for any factory markings that indicate components were updated between its production and delivery to the dealer. If Husqvarna made upgrades to the Automower before shipping, a sticker was placed on the mower's box on the same side as the product number and serial number sticker. These stickers are generally round and display the year the upgrades were completed. The most common sticker is a round blue one labeled either "RW2022" or "RW2024" signifying that Husqvarna "reworked" the Automower in 2022 or 2024. This indicates that in 2022 or 2024, the COM (Automower Connect) board was upgraded to the 4G version, and the software was updated. During this process, the battery was typically charged as well. While these are all beneficial, it's important to note that the RW2022 and RW2024 sticker does not imply that the wheel motors, cutting system, and other components were upgraded to the latest version at that time.

Now that we've provided examples of what to watch for and the reasons behind them, we're going to ease your mind by reviewing each model individually, highlighting the positives, negatives, and drawbacks of each. This will assist you in securing the best possible deal on a Husqvarna Automower. Here are the models you're likely to encounter, along with a few that might still be lurking in a dealer's warehouse.

Automower Models

Automower Models:

There are 2 versions of the 115H. The original version that only has Bluetooth app connectivity, and the version that has 4G cellular app connectivity. Husqvarna dropped the MSRP for both versions to $699.99 back in 2022. The version with 4G cellular connectivity comes with the blue RW2022 or RW2024 sticker that we mentioned. Most of the 115H's you find will have a 2019 serial number. Original versions had the green boundary wire known to have corrosion issues included. Even in 2023 we would still receive randomly receive a few 115H's in our order from Husqvarna that had 2019 serial numbers, green boundary wire, and an "RW2022" sticker on them.

Look For: RW2022 or RW2024 sticker on box. Has 4G Connect. Battery has been replaced or at least charged and tested since time of build. Has black UV wire included. Is recharge by date on box is past current date?

310

Husqvarna stopped producing the 310 version sold here in the North American market several years ago. The 310 sold in North America should not be confused with the 310 Mark II or 310 NERA models available in Europe. If you find a 310 listed as a "New" mower, it is a new leftover from 2019 or earlier. This model did not have Automower Connect installed from the factory and it would have to be added as an accessory. Many of these came with install supplies included, but the included wire was the green wire know to have corrosion issues.

Look For:  Battery has been replaced. Automower Connect added to it. Boundary wire was upgraded to black UV wire. Severely discounted from original MSRP.

315

Before there was a 315X there was the plain base model 315. this version did not come with headlights or Automower Connect. Automower Connect could be added as an accessory for an additional cost. Like the 310, this model was discontinued in the North American market a few years ago and should not be confuse with current 315 variations available in Europe.  you find a 315 listed as a "New" mower, it is a new leftover from 2019 or earlier.

Look For:  Battery was replaced. Automower Connect has been added to it.

315X

The 315X was phased out and replaced in the North American Automower line up by the 415X in 2022. The newest serial numbers you are likely to see will start with 20. Despite this model being phased out and not being produced for the past few years there is still a decent amount of left over inventory out there. Husqvarna even had some leftovers available to ship to dealers briefly last spring.

Notable Upgrades:  The battery was upgraded from the black wrapped style battery to the new black plastic boxed version battery starting with serial number 2006XXXXX. Wheel motors were upgraded starting with serial number 2028XXXXX. Cutting system was upgraded to improved 3 blade cutting disk system starting with serial number 20XXXXXXX

Look For:  Serial number ranges of noted upgrades. Any rework stickers. Has COM board been upgraded to 4G version? Is recharge by date on box is past current date?

Introduced in 2021 and made available for North America in 2022.

Look For:  Serial number. Is recharge by date on box is past current date?

As mentioned earlier, this model has been available since 2016 but has had its looks and several key components changed over the years. Not to be confused with the 430X NERA version available in Europe.

520

In production since 2018, but not really a popular model in North America until around 2020. This is one that you definitely have to look at the box to make sure that you know what you are getting, or NOT getting in this case because Husqvarna actually shipped some 520 and 520H models to dealers with out the transformer included. The mowers shipped with out the transformer had a sticker from Husqvarna on the boxing noting this. It's important to note that this model uses a 4 AH battery and a 2.2 amp transformer (More info about this below).

Notable Upgrades:  Battery upgraded to current black plastic box encased version starting with serial number 201112438. Wheel motors upgraded to version with HD gearbox in 2021. 520H

Introduced in 2020. And just like the 520, this is one that you definitely have to look at the box to make sure that you know what you are getting, or NOT getting in this case because Husqvarna actually shipped some 520 and 520H models to dealers with out the transformer included. The mowers shipped with out the transformer had a sticker from Husqvarna on the boxing noting this. 450X EPOS and 450XH EPOS

These models were introduced in 2022 and there have not been many significant changes made since they simply adapted the EPOS RTK system that was used on the 550 EPOS and 550H EPOS models to the existing 450X and 450XH models.

520 EPOS and 520H EPOS

These models were just introduced in 2024 and have no significant changes made since then.

550 EPOS and 550H EPOS

These models were introduced in 2021 and there have been a few notable changes and upgrades made to these models.

Notable Upgrades: Wheel motors upgraded starting with serial number 230909784 in 550 EPOS models and serial number 2309XXXXX in 550H EPOS models. Cutting disk was upgraded to 5 blade cutting disk starting with serial number 230909784 on 550 EPOS and serial number 2309XXXXX on 550H EPOS.

Automower iQ Series

All 4 models in the iQ Series line up are new this year. The 410iQ, 420iQ, and 440iQ are rear wheel drive models that are a completely new design with all new features that are not available in the previous models of Automowers. As we noted before, these iQ series mowers can be used wirelessly, wired, and boundary wire supporting EPOS.

Comparing the wired 435X & 535 AWD Automowers to the new 435iQ Automower
Husqvarna AWD comparason

The 435iQ is the all wheel drive model in the new iQ line up. It is very similar to the 435X and 535 AWD models, but it has EPOS capability. The 435iQ can be used wirelessly or with a boundary wire. But unlike the 3 other iQ models the 435iQ does not have the support by wire feature. You can find more info about the all four of the Automower iQ Series models HERE

Upgrades & Warranty

The notable upgrades made to each model through the years might seem insignificant compared to saving several hundred dollars or more on an Automower. But when you consider what it will cost you to make these upgrades later it really starts to add up. For example, you see a 450XH advertised for $1000 off the regular price. It has a 2019 serial number, but has a RW2024 sticker on it. Yes, you'll save a lot of money up front but then consider that this mower has the old revision 3 wheel motors that are known to have bearing issues, the old white labeled transformer, the cutting system with a cutting disk that's smaller than the skid plate and struggles to cut taller grass around the edges of the lawn, batteries (450's have 2 batteries) that are now 6 years old, the old charging contact assembly and inner charging cable known to melt at the connector between the two, and and so on. Yes, you can get some of these items replaced under warranty if they fail during the warranty period. But in order to get warranty coverage the mower must go to the dealer which means down time during the mowing season. Sure, you can make the repairs yourself but then the repairs will not be covered by warranty since they were not made by a dealer and the parts will have to be purchased at your own expense. And items like the cutting disk and skid plate rarely have an issue that is warrantable.

But if you find a 450XH for say $800 off MSRP and it has a 2022 serial number, then you're actually getting a much better deal! Since this 450XH has a 2022 serial number you know that it has the better wheel motors, charging harnesses, cutting system, transformer, fresher batteries, etc. which all add up to this 450XH being better performing and more reliable which saves you more money over the life of the machine.

Speaking of warranty! As previously mentioned, you may be able to have some of the parts replaced under warranty if they fail within the warranty period. The warranty period lasts for 2 years from the purchase date, but the parts must fail during normal use. This means if you buy an Automower with older wheel motors or an old white labeled transformer, these parts won't be replaced under warranty simply because a newer version exists. Following the saying "If it ain't broke, don't fix it," since the parts haven't failed, Husqvarna will not replace them for free. Another crucial point about the warranty is that you must buy the mower from an authorized Automower dealer or retailer. Therefore, if you purchase a "New" Automower that has never been used from someone on Ebay, marketplace, an inventory liquidator, yard sale, or discount second-hand shop, etc., your mower won't qualify for warranty repair as it will be considered a second-hand purchase. You can view the Husqvarna warranty policy HERE.

Used Automowers

Buying A Used Automower

In 2025, more used Automowers will be available for sale than ever before, as people upgrade to a better model due to finding a great deal or switch to the iQ series for the latest features. The positive aspect is that well-maintained and functioning Husqvarna Automowers still hold some value, allowing you to find a dependable used Automower at an excellent price. Just ensure you use the information we provided earlier to check for any upgrades made to the mower.

When purchasing a used Automower, always ensure you obtain the PIN code from the seller. If they claim they do not remember it or provide excuses for not having it, proceed with caution, as this often suggests the mower might be stolen or not a suitable purchase. The Automower will not function without the PIN code. If the seller is not a dealer and you do not know them personally, request the Automower's serial number. You can then reach out to Husqvarna or a local Husqvarna dealer to verify if the serial number has been reported as stolen. Should you buy a used Automower that requires repairs, visit www.RoboticMowerServices.com for parts and technical information to assist in repairing your Automower.

Selling A Used Automower

Yes, the earlier paragraph mentions that there's still value in used Automowers. However, the downside is that the value might not be as high as you expect or desire. If you're planning to sell your current Automower to upgrade to a newer or improved model, you'll likely benefit more from selling it privately rather than trading it in for a new Automower. Given the prices of the new iQ Series Automowers with advanced features and the promotions dealers will offer to clear out old stock of 430X, 430XH, 450X, and 450XH models that need a boundary wire, the value of used Automowers will decrease significantly. For example, if you own a first-generation EPOS Automower (450/520/550EPOS), trading it in for an iQ Series model won't yield a good value because the iQ Series mowers are priced considerably lower than what you originally paid for your first-generation EPOS mower.

Another factor that reduces the value of used Automowers is the influx of models from other brands entering the market in 2025. Some of them are very solid models with better features than the you will find on the pre-2025 Automowers. And of course some of the models from new brands entering the robotic mower catagory may not match the durability or reliability of a used 2018 450X Automower, but they still attract potential buyers away from used Automowers.

This might not be the news you want if you own a used Automower you're hoping to sell, particularly if you're not keen on spending time advertising and responding to inquiries. A possible solution is to gift your used Automower to a family member, which is a common occurrence when customers upgrade to a newer model.

Finding The Right Deal For You

Now that you know what's good and......well, not so good, you're ready to start your search. A few last items to keep in mind.

  • Don't undersize. Make sure to find a model rated for the size of your lawn. It definitely doesn't hurt to go with a model rated to handle more than what you need. If you have a 1/2 acre property and have the choice between a 415X or a 430 (430X/430XH) for just slightly more money, go with the 430. Yes the 430's model are rated for 3/4 acre and might sound like overkill, but this means the mower won't be working as hard or as often so in theory it will last longer. Having a model capable of covering a larger lawn than you actually have is also helpful during times of heavy growth when smaller mowers would struggle to keep up.

  • Don't be afraid of models that use a boundary wire. Yes, there are a lot of horror stories about broken boundary wires. But as always, having knowledge of how to diagnose and make repairs is the key. And we just happen to have the most informative step by step trouble shooting guide for issues with boundary wire systems! You can view the RMS "No Loop Signal" troubleshooting guide HERE .

  • Buy based on your mowing needs, not by price. This means if you have a lawn with steep hills buy an all wheel drive model instead of a rear wheel drive that might cost less. If you have a lawn with a lot of plants or other objects to maneuver around, consider an iQ Series Automower with radar instead of a 430XH just because it is cheaper. If you have a 1 acre lawn don't buy a 430X or 430XH and try to run it more often to keep up.

  • Buy what's going to actually work in your lawn. If you have a property with a lot of tree coverage don't buy a first generation EPOS Automower just because you found one on sale. Just because a few people online say theirs works under a heavy tree canopy doesn't mean it will work in your lawn. Buy a model that uses a boundary wire or an iQ Series that can use the Support by boundary wire" feature for mowing areas like this.

  • The latest greatest isn't always the best choice. Like mentioned above, if you have a lawn that could have issues with satellite coverage and you have inclines and need an all wheel drive model, don't go for the 435iQ just because it's a new model. In a scenario like this you would need to use a boundary wire so save yourself some money and buy the 435X that uses a boundary wire. No need to pay a few thousand dollars more to get a model with a feature that you can't use.

  • Try to buy from a reputable dealer. Yes, this was mentioned earlier, but when you buy from a reputable dealer you know where to go when you have a problem. How do you know if your dealer is reputable? Ask questions. Ask to see pictures or videos of some of the Automowers they've installed. If you don't have a reputable dealer in your area then contact Robotic Mower Services and we can get you set up with a new Automower to fit your needs.
